Generator Concrete Pad Size by Model and Generator Size

Compare generator concrete pad sizes by model, check manufacturer dimensions, and estimate concrete volume without relying on kW alone.

Generator concrete pad size depends on the model, its footprint, and its installation requirements—not its kW rating alone. The manufacturer examples below connect specific generator footprints to published pad guidance. Use them for preliminary planning, then confirm the installation drawing supplied for your exact unit before ordering or pouring concrete.

Concrete Pad Size Reference Table

Start with the generator’s manufacturer, model, and installation drawing. Dimensions below are length × width. Where pad dimensions are calculated from a published edge extension, that calculation is identified rather than presented as a separately specified manufacturer dimension.

Generator or matching footprint Generator dimensions Concrete pad length × width Thickness and loading information Source and revision or publication date
Generac Guardian air-cooled standby unit matching the listed footprint; confirm exact model applicability 48 × 25 in footprint 54 × 31 in, calculated by adding the support article’s 3 in extension on each side Support article describes an approximately 5 in thick prepared area. Confirm the concrete specification against the unit-specific installation manual and local requirements; this is not a structural load rating. Generac concrete-mounting support article, May 7, 2026.
Generac Next Generation (NXG) air-cooled standby unit matching the listed footprint; confirm exact model applicability 46.4 × 26.3 in footprint 52.4 × 32.3 in, calculated by adding the support article’s 3 in extension on each side Same approximately 5 in prepared-area guidance in the support article; concrete thickness, reinforcement, and anchoring still require project-specific confirmation. Generac concrete-mounting support article, May 7, 2026.
Generac Protector RG048, 48 kW, matching drawing A0000293718-C 83.4 × 35.0 in overall enclosure dimensions 95.4 × 47 in minimum recommended pad, explicitly stated in the drawing; 6 in extension on each side Drawing lists genset-only weight as 1,781 lb (808 kg). It does not establish pad thickness or allowable foundation loading; options can change weight and center of gravity. Specification sheet A0000373704, Rev E, September 25, 2020; installation drawing A0000293718-C.

The air-cooled thickness guidance needs particular care. Generac’s May 7, 2026 support article describes an approximately 5 in thick area for concrete mounting. However, its 10–26 kW installation manual A0001846478 applies the 5 in preparation dimension to pea gravel or crushed stone and addresses concrete pads separately through applicable building requirements. Do not treat that preparation dimension as a universal concrete slab thickness. Resolve any difference using the documentation applicable to the exact unit and the local approving authority.

The RG048 row records a specific published drawing revision, not a claim that this drawing applies to every current 48 kW generator. Its stated pad dimensions should not be carried over to another model simply because the electrical rating matches.

How to Use the Table

Match the model before calculating concrete

For an RG048 matching the cited drawing, the published overall dimensions are 83.4 × 35.0 in, with a recommended 6 in pad extension on every side:

[
L_p = 83.4 + 2(6) = 95.4\text{ in}
]

[
W_p = 35.0 + 2(6) = 47.0\text{ in}
]

Here, (L_p) and (W_p) are pad length and width in inches. These calculations reproduce the drawing’s stated minimum recommended pad dimensions. They do not determine slab thickness, reinforcement, or soil suitability.

Once a project-approved thickness is available, estimate the volume of a simple rectangular slab:

[
V=\frac{L_p W_p T}{46{,}656}
]

Here, (V) is concrete volume in cubic yards, and (L_p), (W_p), and (T) are length, width, and thickness in inches.

For example, if the approved design specifies a 54 × 31 × 5 in rectangular slab, its geometric volume is approximately 0.179 cubic yards, or 4.84 cubic feet. This example assumes uniform thickness and excludes thickened edges, footings, excavation irregularities, and ordering allowance. The assumed thickness is an input, not a result of the volume calculation.

Pad Dimensions Are Not Foundation Capacity

A manufacturer’s pad length and width do not establish how much load the completed foundation can support. For the RG048 example, the cited 1,781 lb figure is labeled “genset only,” while shipping weight is listed separately. Neither should automatically be substituted for the complete installed loading condition.

Before construction, have the installer—and a qualified structural or geotechnical professional where needed—confirm:

  • The applicable equipment weight, options, support points, and anchor layout.
  • Concrete thickness, reinforcement, and support conditions.
  • Local wind, seismic, frost, drainage, and other site requirements.
  • Whether a prefabricated pad is approved for the specific unit and installation.

Generac’s installation guidance requires a stable, level mounting surface and consideration of supporting structures and applicable local requirements. Its Protector drawing also directs users of engineered prefabricated slabs to the slab manufacturer’s specifications.

Do not substitute engine horsepower or engine weight for the generator assembly’s installation data. The table provides no verified engine-only foundation-sizing method; use the applicable equipment drawings and foundation design requirements instead.

Check Placement Separately

The concrete pad’s edge extension is not a clearance to a building, window, air intake, or combustible material. The cited Protector drawing requires separate allowance for maintenance and airflow, while Generac’s air-cooled installation manual addresses exhaust entry, carbon monoxide, ventilation, and water exposure as distinct site-selection issues. A correctly sized pad does not establish that the location is safe or acceptable.

Before fixing the pad location or conduit openings, have the qualified installer confirm the exact unit’s installation instructions and the requirements adopted by the local authority having jurisdiction.
